A team of talented individuals fed up of waiting for Mother 4 have decided to go it alone and make it their own.
wow this looks great.
Brooks: FLUENT ANIMATION, IN MY SEASON ONE SIMPSONS?
The loss of the fluid animation is a bit tragic when compared to the final product, but watch their hands go straight through Marge’s hair (remember when y’all collectively shit your pants over Elsa doing the same thing in Frozen) and how their basic character models are completely abandoned (those elbows, those figures). It’s a fun piece to look at but I can kind of understand why it was sent back?
Actually this deleted scene and then the shot immediately afterwards (which is a close up while they dance and Homer says something flirty and waggles his eyebrows) are some of my favorite pieces of animation.. anyway, I’d never noticed the hand clipping through the hair ‘til you mentioned it, hhaha.. oh man. That’s kinda funny.
But here’s the thing, like… they’re taking cues from all of these older classic animators like Tex Avery and junk, guys who deliberately went off model and got a little crazy with it, and really pushed for extreme poses and exaggerated movement, because that’s one of the unique advantages of animation that sets it apart from other mediums. It’s not necessarily wrong to abandon character models in favor of communicating movement. At least from an animator’s standpoint.
From a producer’s standpoint (Brooks), it’s too wild and needs to be toned down. I understand why he would’ve sent it back, but the animation that they settled on is so devoid of anything fun or endearing. Like some of Homer’s keys are nice, yeah, because clearly these guys know how to draw, but all of the stuff that makes animation fun to do and fun to watch is just gone.
When you’re just doing what you do and using the potential of your medium, and the guy in charge (with no animation background) tells you “this is shit”, it’s a little soul-crushing. “Fix this” or “change that” are fine, but what’s happening here is different kinds of people guided by different principles not properly communicating with each other. Brooks makes a pissy comment, the animators respond with shitty animation. Like… if he’d been more direct, we could’ve had a middle ground.
I hate sounding so dramatic about it, and I know why it was sent back, but I’ve got a lot of feelings about the animation in the first few seasons of the Simpsons. I would’ve cleared the room right along with them.
I hate good animation going to waste.
